How to configure printers on Windows
A) For those in NTLANCT domain
Click Start and select Devices and Printers. Select Add printer and then Add Lan, wireless or Bluetooth printer. Click Stop and then Printers desidred is not listed.
Click on Search a printer in the directory based on position or functionality. At point in: Whole directory select ct.infn.it. Click now on Find. All printers will show up. Right click on the desidered printer and choose Connect.
Continue process until the end of configuration.
B) For those not in NTLANCT domain but who have access to Windows CTSERV print server
Click Start and select Devices and Printers. Select Add printer and then Add Lan, wireless or Bluetooth printer. Click Stop and then Printers desidred is not listed.
In the field Select a shared printer by name write \\ctserv\
If requested, to connect to CTSERV insert user and password.
Select the desired printer and continue process until the end of configuration.
C) For those not in NTLANCT domain and not having access to Windows CTSERV printserver
Printer configuration will take place through print server CUPS.
Connect, through the browser, to print server cups.ct.infn.lt to view the list and the location of printer available in the office. Be aware that print server is available only on local INFN network.
Click on the desired printer in the list and copy the link shown in the browser navigation bar.
For example, if you are willing to configure printer Hp3700, click on the field on the first column (Queue Name), copy link shown in navigation bar (select through mouse ansh push CTRL+C on keyboard) that is http://cups.ct.infn.it:631/printers/Hp3700.
Click Start and select Devices and Printers. Select Add printer and then Add Lan, wireless or Bluetooth printer. Click Stop and then Printers desidred is not listed.
In the field Select a shared printer by name paste the copied link at previous step (i.e.: http://cups.ct.infn.it:631/printers/Hp3700) and continue the process until the end of configuration.
How to configure printers on Linux
Unfortunately CUPS managment is related to Linux distribution so there is not a standard way to configure printers
Here the procedure to configure it manually.
From Linux shell, with root privileges, run the following command:
echo "ServerName cups.ct.infn.it" > /etc /cups/client.conf
Restart cups service running the following command (you can do it from the same shell):
service cups restart
(if you reboot the PC/Notebook service also restarts)
How to configure printers on Mac OS X
On Mac OS X printers are not managed similarly as linux but you need to configure them manually.
Update printers drivers by this link.
Connect, through the browser, to print server cups.ct.infn.lt to view the list and the location of printer available in the office.
Click on System Preferences and then Printers & Scanners.
Click on + to add a printer and click on IP
In the new window insert with these settings
Address: cups.ct.infn.it,
Protocol: Internet Printing Protocol - IPP
Queue: /printers/ <printer name>
Name: <printer name>
set as <printer name> the name of the printer present in the first column (Queue Name) in the table available on cups.ct.infn.it.
Downlaod PPD containing printer configuration related to the desired printer at the following links:

Copy PPD file to the path /Users/Shared
Click on Generic PostScript Printer , seletct Other... and choose the PPD file downloaded previously.
Cilck Ok to complete.
